Today we did a scenic rail journey from Christchurch through the Canturbury Plain, Southern Alps, Arthur Pass, and through to the western side of the south island at Greymouth. The weather was VERY dreary so visibility wasn't the best but Hans had a lot of fun hanging out in the open air car with his camera. Here are some of the better pictures that both Hans and I took during the journey (in no particular order). Despite the rain, the train itself was cozy and comfortable and I enjoyed getting drinks from the cafe car. I do love trains.
*The train did stop occasionally to pick up or drop off other passengers. Half-way through the first leg I noticed that there were a lot of train spotters either at the stations or set up with a camera and tripod at various river crossings. The creepy part was that all of them had the same dark hair and plain face. Just when I was starting to feel like this part of New Zealand was overrun with Children of the Corn type trainspotters Hans noticed that the same blue car kept passing us on the motorway. It turned out that while the two fellas in the car did indeed look the same, they were chasing the train all the way to Greymouth. Mystery solved!
Spotting the spotters!
