Italy: A Stroll Around Rome


No real plans today.  Our goal was to wander the open-air museum that is Rome and check out some lesser-known landmarks.  Had a nice lunch at Hosteria Grappolo d'Oro, which seemed to be packed with locals.

At the end of the day we visited Santa Maria in Cosmedin, a really lovely little old church that holds a few relics, including St. Valentine's skull.  Now you know why I wanted to visit.  Sadly, it's also the location of the Mouth of Truth (of Roman Holiday fame).  People crowd around the church and form a line so they can have their picture taken with this likely former drain cover from the nearby Temple of Hercules.  Just like back in 2001, if you can maneuver around the crowd and slip through the church door, it's nice and quiet inside.
