It has been over twenty years since the last time we went to Hawaii together. The previous trip was one that I, as a college student, had planned nearly a year before and it just so happened that I decided to invite my boyfriend along. The rest is history! This year is our twenty year wedding anniversary and so we went big.
The travel day to get here was very long. Below is the recap:
It was another one of those endless travel days westward, where you are constantly traveling “back” in time through several time zones.
Four AM alarm clock, at airport 90 minutes later. The flight from Baltimore to Seattle was delayed by a monster storm that stretched from Ohio to West Virginia and later into Pennsylvania. Air Traffic Control charted us a new flight path far to the south in order to avoid the weather. Unfortunately, it meant that we would miss our original connection to Honolulu. Fortunately, this meant that our luggage was more likely to make the transfer to a later plane, whereas originally it was gonna be a one-hour connection. We had a nice lunch at the airport and we were looking forward to boarding our final flight of the day but...it was delayed for four hours! Sigh…
The airline gave everyone a meal coupon and travel credits so we had dinner/second lunch at a burger joint. By the time we landed in Hawaii it was 8 PM local time and 2 AM at home. Ouch. Getting our bags was a little complicated. We think that the airline (ironically) put our bags on the original earlier flight and that they arrived before we did. But the airport staff were super helpful and we were very glad to be leaving the airport without having to file a claim and wait for delivery at the hotel. Check-in at the Wayfinder Waikiki hotel was a relief. Shower. Bed time!
