Daylight Hangover and Memory Lane

Rough morning.  I guess jet lag gets worse the older you get.  Go figure.  We got some "meh" coffee and went for a mild walk around campus.  Most things haven't changed, but the Duckering and Bunnell buildings are being merged into one!  It will be very interesting when it's done.  It looks like the design will take advantage of the southern exposure and hillside vantage.  The Wood Center has a new cafeteria being built, which is going to replace the dreaded Commons.  I was willing to finish the job and burn the empty Commons down but then someone told us the Campus Catholic Ministry was still using the building.  Oops.

It ain't Fairbanks without some rad furniture/vehicular structures!

Signer's Hall is on the left, where the Alaska Constitution was signed

Campus is going all Human Centipede!

...which segues perfectly into "Turtle Sex Park"

Wood Center interior with it's mysterious staircase.  Riot-proof Gruening on the right.

I spent an entire semester arriving at the building on the right before sunrise and leaving after sunset and I was only working six hours a day.  Le sigh.

The famous UAF Peace Laser (old Sun Star joke)

While taking a break this drove by, because why not?

How much cottonwood pollen was there?  This much!

In the afternoon we met up with Alesha, David, and Brad at Creamers Field where I got EATEN ALIVE BY MOSQUITOES!

We picked up Cass and drove with Brad up the highway to one of the many lookouts since the weather was agreeable.  To the south the Alaska Range was very beautiful.

Roughly 8 years ago, I went to the downtown Midnight Sun Festival with a few friends.  This time, I went in the evening and it was a very different crowd.  I think it ran until 1 am, so by the time Hans and I got there at 8:30pm the families were starting to leave even though the bands and other entertainment were still rolling.  We caught up with Alesha and danced in the street to Shagg, the band David plays in!  It was mostly 70's funk and disco tunes but some more modern songs too.  We had some pretty good local street food and saw a very scary clown.  Yikes!

When we left the sun was still up so we drove all around until about 2:30am, finally feeling like we were on Alaska time!
